Getting Tons of Stuff Done
Musings—Jul 05, 2010
I can hear it now. The words echo all around me – “I don’t have time to get all the things done that I need to get done”. Sometimes it’s others saying it….and sometimes it’s me!
I know that there is never going to be enough time to do everything I want to do. That’s why prioritizing tasks and being mindful about how I spend my time is so important.
But I think I’m onto a brilliant idea.
Have you ever gone on a trip or vacation and in the weeks or days leading up to the time of departure, you are focusing heavily on getting things done? You are driven. You are super focused. You are not frittering away even a minute of the day.
Well, if you and I can do it then, why don’t we do it at other times? I think I know what makes the difference—it’s the deadline that the trip imposes on you. If you have a flight leaving next Tuesday the airlines are not going to delay the flight just because you didn’t get everything done that you needed to do beforehand. They will fly away without you…and not even care that they did.
So, I’ve been thinking that every couple of months I’m going to ‘make believe’ that I’m going on a trip. I’m going to give myself a self imposed artificial deadline and work my buns off the week before. I’m looking forward to getting all these odds and ends cleared off my desk and getting some large projects completed—fast.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
