It Sucks to Have Clutter
Musings—Mar 15, 2010
Every day I see clutter. It is usually someone else’s, and they tell me that it sucks to have clutter. There are times I see clutter without even leaving the house. It’s not good for someone doing the kind of work I do, to have too much clutter – so I keep on top of it. But there are times (and I’m sure you’ll be able to relate to this) that it just ‘happens’.
And it just ‘happened’ to me the other day. I walked into the guest bedroom and there it was, clutter. It was taking the form of clothing (pants to be specific) that either might fit, didn’t fit, hoped they’d fit, never will fit again. They were all neatly folded and stacked on the cedar chest…..waiting for me to do something with them. They’ve been waiting for a few months.
I decided then and there that I would deal with them before the end of the month. That gives me 2 weeks to either lose 10 pounds, surgically remove flesh off my thighs and/or stomach, or just try them on one last time to be sure they don’t fit before I give them to a charity that raises money for the local hospital.
Do you know which solution I will likely end up doing in 2 weeks? You’re right. I will not lose the 10 pounds, nor opt for invasive surgery (isn’t all surgery invasive?). I will just end up trying them on. So why wait for 2 weeks to go by before I do that? I don’t know the answer to that question either. But writing this has proved one thing. If I know what the outcome is going to be in two weeks, why not just do it now, or tomorrow?
I did. I did it the next day. All it took was me deciding to do it and then taking the action to make it happen.
There. Done. Finished. Clutter gone. No more clutter in the guest room.
I could’ve told myself “well, it’s in the guest room so it doesn’t matter if there’s clutter there – no one will see it”. But I know that clutter is clutter. Whether we see it or not, it’s weighing us down. It’s preventing us from living our lives in a way that we want to.
I feel lighter already….maybe even 10 pounds lighter!
